Designing to the Grid is the first in-depth study of the carpets and carpet designs by T. A. C. Colenbrander (1841-1930), one of the pioneers of Nieuwe Kunst, the Dutch contribution to international Art Nouveau. Earlier studies on Colenbrander have emphasized the fairy-tale ceramic designs of Colenbrander, manufactured for example by The Hague ceramic factory Rozenburg. Now the focus is on the carpet designs of Colenbrander. Their intriguing and fascinating decorations demand our admiration because they were designed more than a century before the introduction of computer-aided design. This study by Richard Mills, who has already published several splendid articles on the carpet designs by Colenbrander, is the missing link in the publications about Colenbrander and Nieuwe Kunst.
